Mansard roofs are a unique 4-sided gambrel roof, often featuring diamond-shaped dormer-style windows. Second Empire homes are also characterized by their square or rectangular base, attic space, and decorative millwork. Bringing together a new culture comprised of a variety of designers, merchandisers, artists and manufacturers from all over the world, Vintage Havana came to life. With a team of poised individuals, each personality brought to the table a new strength. The marriage of music, art, architecture, history, travel and fashion made way for a feminine spirit intertwining with courageous individuality.

The most common type of Victorian style, the Folk Victorian house, is more simplistic in design. Characterized by their square look, classically detailed trims, gable roof, and front porch, Folk Victorian homes exude the spirit of the Victorian style without the grandeur. Appropriately named, the Octagon style home has eight sides, making homes feel airy and full of light.

Victorian house interior features

Yet different architectural styles have influenced the look of Victorian homes, resulting in unique spins on the standard design. Gothic Revival style homes take inspiration from medieval European churches with their steeply pitched roofs and pointed arches. You can also find ornate woodworking details, turrets, and decorative columns or posts. Picture a dollhouse – a colorful exterior, several stories high, gabled roof, highly decorative details, maybe even a tower – and you’ve just envisioned a Victorian style home. From their iconic exteriors, to their opulent interiors fit for a queen, Victorian houses are a unique home style that stands out from the rest. While Victorian houses have many different architectural styles, there are common features you can find among them.

You’ll often find crown molding, window and door trim, and intricate staircases. Victorian homes are more formal, so there may be many “parlors” or living rooms, and typically feature a formal dining room. There may also be hidden nooks, balconies, and high ceilings, adding to the grandeur of a Victorian era home.

Italianate style Victorian homes mirror the Italian villas they are modeled after. Typically only two stories, these homes also feature single-story porches, wide eaves, low roofs, and the characteristic ornamental brackets. If you’ve decided that a Victorian home is right for you, you may also be wondering how to highlight these homes’ unique features.

Design tips for Victorian homes

Queen Anne homes, along with Italianate homes, are widely seen in San Francisco—a result of it being a “boom town” during this time period. The city’s most famous are undoubtedly the “Painted Ladies,” a block of Queen Anne-style townhouses painted three or more colors (you know them from the opening credits of Full House). By far, the city with the most well-known Victorian style homes is San Francisco, CA.

Queen Anne Victorian homes are the most famous Victorian style architecture that comes to mind. Often more asymmetrical in design, Queen Anne style homes feature wrap-around porches, balconies, towers, bay windows, pitched roofs, highly ornate trim, and brightly painted exteriors. Stick-Eastlake homes, also just called Stick, share a resemblance to Tudor-style homes with their diagonal, horizontal, or vertical planks (called “stick work”) adorning the home’s exterior. Typically made with wood, Stick-Eastlake Victorian homes are also characterized by their pitched gable roofs, trusses, towers, and embellished trim. Unlike other Victorian style homes, Stick-Eastlake style may not have bay windows and as much intricate decoration.

Mass production aided home builders in adding architectural details like intricate metalwork and decorative woodwork throughout homes. While the Victorian home style originated in England, it quickly made its way to many other countries, including the US. From the moment you see a Victorian house, it stands out from the rest with its gingerbread-house-like look and colorful paint. Victorian houses are full of history as most have been around for over a century, so you’ll be living in a home shared by many others before you. As with the exterior, the interior of a Victorian house is equally as ornate and decorated.

Similar to Gothic Revival, Romanesque Revival Victorian homes take inspiration from European churches with their arches and turrets. Romanesque Revival style often features a brick exterior, intricate stone detailing, and a reddish color. Unlike many other types of Victorian architecture styles, Romanesque Revival homes don’t have that characteristic wood trim. Victorian homes have a staple look – ornate exteriors, reminiscent of a castle with large windows.

We’ve consulted with experts for their best design tips when styling the interior, so read on to see what they had to say. All Victorian style homes within the city name or zip code you entered will populate the page, and you’ll be able to begin your search. As with any house you decide to buy, there will undoubtedly be pros and cons. Maybe you’re not a fan of the low ceilings, but the natural lighting throughout the house makes up for it.

These interior and exterior features help tie Victorian era homes together, making them easily identifiable from other home styles. Victorian houses became popular from 1837 to 1901, coinciding with the Industrial Revolution. As new building materials became widely available, builders were able to take a different approach to home design.

United States: Freedom in the World 2021 Country Report

The changes also permitted the chief executive to hold ministerial positions and dissolve the legislature after it has served just half of its term. Freedom of personal expression, which has experienced the largest declines of any democracy indicator since 2012, was further restrained during the health crisis. In the midst of a heavy-handed lockdown in the Philippines under President Rodrigo Duterte, the authorities stepped up harassment and arrests of social media users, including those who criticized the government’s pandemic response.

Press & Media

In Georgia in 2018, for example, the registrations of some 53,000 voters—most of them Black—were stalled due to applicant information that did not exactly match government records, and hundreds of thousands of other voters had been purged from the rolls for failing to vote in recent elections. A number of important laws are designed to ensure the political rights of members of racial and ethnic minority groups, and the 2020 elections featured increased participation as candidates by women and representatives of such groups. The Congress elected in 2020 included the first openly gay Black House members and record or near-record numbers of Black, Hispanic, Native American, Asian American and Pacific Islander, LGBT+, and women lawmakers.

Electoral Process

Under Modi, India appears to have abandoned its potential to serve as a global democratic leader, elevating narrow Hindu nationalist interests at the expense of its founding values of inclusion and equal rights for all. Ethiopia had also made democratic progress in recent years, as new prime minister Abiy Ahmed lifted restrictions on opposition media and political groups and released imprisoned journalists and political figures. In July 2020, a popular ethnic Oromo singer was killed, leading to large protests in the Oromia Region that were marred by attacks on non-Oromo populations, a violent response by security forces, and the arrest of thousands of people, including many opposition figures.

In Hungary, for example, a series of emergency measures allowed the government to rule by decree despite the fact that coronavirus cases were negligible in the country until the fall. Among other misuses of these new powers, the government withdrew financial assistance from municipalities led by opposition parties. The push for greater executive authority was in keeping with the gradual concentration of power that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been orchestrating over the past decade. But beyond their impact in 2020, official responses to COVID-19 have laid the groundwork for government excesses that could affect democracy for years to come.

In Sri Lanka, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa dissolved the parliament in early March, intending to hold elections the following month. The pandemic delayed the vote, however, giving Rajapaksa the opportunity to rule virtually unchecked and consolidate power through various ministerial appointments. After his party swept the August elections, the new parliament approved constitutional amendments that expanded presidential authority, including by allowing Rajapaksa to appoint electoral, police, human rights, and anticorruption commissions.

United States: Indictment of Former President Trump Is a Test and Opportunity for US Democracy

An anonymous whistleblower from the Central Intelligence Agency who filed the complaint that touched off the impeachment inquiry in 2019 faced extreme pressure from the president and his allies, including attempts to publicize their identity. Although the whistleblower’s identity was never publicly confirmed, the individual was forced into protective surveillance amid threats of violence. Following his February 2020 acquittal in the Senate, President Trump fired or forced the resignation of several officials who offered testimony that harmed his case during the House impeachment process. Observers warned that the situation could deter officials from reporting possible corruption in the future. In October, the president signed an executive order calling for many senior civil servants to be reclassified in a manner that could allow them to be fired for political or other arbitrary reasons, further weakening their ability to report malfeasance; implementation of the order remained unclear at year’s end.

By incorporating movement into counseling sessions, clients become more empowered, motivated, and goal-oriented, all while strengthening their bodies and becoming more flexible. Fitness Therapy is usually used to complement a course of treatment (inpatient or outpatient) to make it even more successful. Increasing the connection between a patient’s mind and body helps both with healing as well as in creating new, healthy habits. Commonly known as “day treatment,” a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program.

Similar critiques have been directed at the constitution’s allocation of two Senate seats to each state regardless of population. Defenders of these systems argue that they are fundamental to the United States’ federal structure, in which the states enjoy a substantial degree of autonomy, and claim that they ensure due political attention to parts of the country’s territory that might otherwise be neglected. Some states have adopted strict voter-identification laws whose documentation requirements can disproportionately limit participation by poor, elderly, or racial minority voters; people with disabilities; and university students.

A rare bright spot in a region replete with deeply entrenched authoritarian leaders, Armenia has experienced tentative gains in freedom since mass antigovernment protests erupted in 2018 and citizens voted in a more reform-minded government. But Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s capitulation in the war sparked a violent reaction among some opponents, who stormed the parliament in November and physically attacked the speaker. Such disorder threatens the country’s hard-won progress, and could set off a chain of events that draws Armenia closer to the autocratic tendencies of its neighbors. India, the world’s most populous democracy, dropped from Free to Partly Free status in Freedom in the World 2021. The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and its state-level allies continued to crack down on critics during the year, and their response to COVID-19 included a ham-fisted lockdown that resulted in the dangerous and unplanned displacement of millions of internal migrant workers.

The coronavirus-related economic shock amplified this dynamic, disrupting employment and income for lower-earning, less-educated workers far more than for college-educated professionals. Although the country has legal safeguards against unsafe working conditions, workers in essential industries such as meat processing faced a high risk of contracting COVID-19 in practice, with inadequate protective equipment and hazard pay. Poorer children who lacked the resources to adapt to remote learning were also most harmed by pandemic-linked school closures, which threatened to exacerbate educational inequality. In 2018, under pressure from a bipartisan coalition advocating for reforms to curb mass incarceration, Congress passed and the president signed a law that eased federal mandatory-minimum sentencing rules, among other modest changes. A majority of states have also passed laws in recent years to reduce sentences for certain crimes, decriminalize minor drug offenses, and combat recidivism; such gradual steps continued in 2020. Some states have restricted the use of cash bail, which can unfairly penalize defendants with fewer resources and enlarge pretrial jail populations.

Given many competing priorities, including the pandemic and its socioeconomic aftermath, President Biden will have to remain steadfast, keeping in mind that democracy is a continuous project of renewal that ultimately ensures security and prosperity while upholding the fundamental rights of all people. The COVID-19 pandemic is not the only current global emergency that has the potential to hasten the erosion of democracy. The effects of climate change could have a similar long-term impact, with mass displacement fueling conflict and more nationalist, xenophobic, and racist policies.

Medical training for ambulance workers — along with the design of the ambulances, including the sirens, the flashing lights and radios for talking with doctors at the hospital — were created by Freedom House. The inflation-adjusted national minimum wage has fallen substantially since the 1960s, with the last nominal increase in 2009, though many states and localities have enacted increases since then. Other obstacles to gainful employment include inadequate public transportation and the high cost of living in economically dynamic cities and regions. The latter problem, which is exacerbated by exclusionary housing policies in many jurisdictions, has also contributed to an overall rise in homelessness in recent years. Conditions in prisons, jails, and pretrial detention centers are often poor at the state and local levels, and in 2020 COVID-19 outbreaks occurred at facilities across the country, producing infections and deaths at much higher rates than in the general population. Many jurisdictions and the federal government took steps to ease crowding by releasing suspects and convicted inmates who were deemed less dangerous.

Changing our World One Life at a Time

We publish detailed research on more than 200 countries and territories, because accurate data and rigorous analysis are essential to shining a light on the erosion of freedom. Democracies and private sector actors should work to support core democratic principles and basic human rights at home and around the world. To reverse the global shift toward authoritarian norms, democracy advocates working for freedom in their home countries will need robust solidarity from like-minded allies abroad.

Key to Scores and Status

Meanwhile, restrictions on freedoms of expression and association have worsened over time, pushing the country’s scores deeper into the Partly Free range. The outbreak exposed weaknesses across all the pillars of democracy, from elections and the rule of law to egregiously disproportionate restrictions on freedoms of assembly and movement. Both democracies and dictatorships experienced successes and failures in their battle with the virus itself, though citizens in authoritarian states had fewer tools to resist and correct harmful policies. Ultimately, the changes precipitated by the pandemic left many societies—with varied regime types, income levels, and demographics—in worse political condition; with more pronounced racial, ethnic, and gender inequalities; and vulnerable to long-term effects. The malign influence of the regime in China, the world’s most populous dictatorship, was especially profound in 2020. Beijing ramped up its global disinformation and censorship campaign to counter the fallout from its cover-up of the initial coronavirus outbreak, which severely hampered a rapid global response in the pandemic’s early days.

Freedom House's Reporting on Transnational Repression

Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse. During medically assisted detox, a medical professional monitors the patient and administers medication to mitigate withdrawal symptoms. With a 60-bed dormitory, the center provides many young people living on the streets a stable place to rest their heads at night. Even as Americans remain committed to the ideals of democracy, a majority see democracy in the United States as weak and getting weaker, according to a national survey jointly commissioned by Freedom House, the George W. Bush Institute, and the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement.

Treatment

Democracy’s advocates need to learn from the experience of 2020 and prepare for emergency responses that respect the political rights and civil liberties of all people, including the most marginalized. Multiple military figures were appointed to leading positions on the country’s COVID-19 task force, and the armed services provided essential support in developing emergency hospitals and securing medical supplies. In recent years, observers have raised concerns about the military’s growing influence over civilian governance, and its heavy involvement in the health crisis threatened to accelerate this trend.

Electoral Process

The end product represents the consensus of the analysts, outside advisers, and Freedom House staff, who are responsible for any final decisions. Although an element of subjectivity is unavoidable in such an enterprise, the ratings process emphasizes methodological consistency, intellectual rigor, and balanced and unbiased judgments. More broadly, democracy has demonstrated its adaptability under the unique constraints of a world afflicted by COVID-19. A number of successful elections were held across all regions and in countries at all income levels, including in Montenegro, and in Bolivia, yielding improvements.

Its efforts also featured increased meddling in the domestic political discourse of foreign democracies, transnational extensions of rights abuses common in mainland China, and the demolition of Hong Kong’s liberties and legal autonomy. The Trump administration in 2020 intensified its efforts to reduce the number of legal immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and undocumented immigrants entering and residing in the country. Such moves since 2017 had in many cases been hasty, uncoordinated, and underfunded, leading to implementation problems as well as conflicts with existing laws, constitutional protections, and international human rights standards. While the administration typically cited exaggerated security concerns as justification for its policies, the COVID-19 pandemic provided a new rationale and helped the administration achieve larger declines in the number of newly arriving immigrants and asylum claimants than had previously been possible. Prior to the 2020 edition, Freedom in the World assigned a country or territory two ratings—one for political rights and one for civil liberties—based on its total scores for the political rights and civil liberties questions.

As part of a condition of the sale, the property is now under a conservation easement with the Los Angeles Conservancy. Moon persevered, though, and eventually rose through the ranks to become chief supervisor of Pittsburgh EMS. Another Freedom House paramedic, Mitchell Brown, went on to become the director of the department of public safety for Columbus, Ohio. The US homicide rate, at 5.0 per 100,000 inhabitants as of 2019, remains low by regional and historical standards, and overall crime rates have declined since the 1990s. However, murder rates reportedly rose by more than 20 percent in the first nine months of 2020, with even higher spikes in a number of large cities. The capital district, Puerto Rico, and four overseas US territories are each represented by an elected delegate in the House who can perform most legislative functions but cannot participate in floor votes.

Some highly repressive governments, including those of Turkmenistan and Nicaragua, simply ignored reality and denied the presence of the pathogen in their territory. At the presidential level and in a number of states and localities, officials in the United States obscured data and actively sowed misinformation about the transmission and treatment of the coronavirus, leading to widespread confusion and the politicization of what should have been a public health matter. Similarly, Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro repeatedly downplayed the harms of COVID-19, promoted unproven treatments, criticized subnational governments’ health measures, and sowed doubt about the utility of masks and vaccines. The year leading up to the assault on the Capitol was fraught with other episodes that threw the country into the global spotlight in a new way. Even before 2020, Trump had presided over an accelerating decline in US freedom scores, driven in part by corruption and conflicts of interest in the administration, resistance to transparency efforts, and harsh and haphazard policies on immigration and asylum that made the country an outlier among its Group of Seven peers.

Early implementation of expert recommendations, the deployment of masks and other protective equipment, and efficient contact-tracing and testing efforts that prioritized transparency—combined with the country’s island geography—all helped to control the disease. Meanwhile, Beijing escalated its campaign to sway global opinion against Taiwan’s government and deny the success of its democracy, in part by successfully pressuring the World Health Organization to ignore early warnings of human-to-human transmission from Taiwan and to exclude Taiwan from its World Health Assembly. Even before the virus struck, Taiwanese voters defied a multipronged, politicized disinformation campaign from China and overwhelmingly reelected incumbent president Tsai Ing-wen, who opposes moves toward unification with the mainland. In fact, Belarus was far from the only place where the promise of increased freedom raised by mass protests eventually curdled into heightened repression. Of the 39 countries and territories where Freedom House noted major protests in 2019, 23 experienced a score decline for 2020—a significantly higher share than countries with declines represented in the world at large. In settings as varied as Algeria, Guinea, and India, regimes that protests had taken by surprise in 2019 regained their footing, arresting and prosecuting demonstrators, passing newly restrictive laws, and in some cases resorting to brutal crackdowns, for which they faced few international repercussions.

Freedom House is founded on the core conviction that freedom flourishes in democratic nations where governments are accountable to their people. We speak out against threats to democracy and empower individuals to exercise their fundamental rights through a unique combination of analysis, advocacy, and direct support to frontline defenders of freedom, especially those working in closed authoritarian societies. The United States has a deeply rooted rule-of-law tradition, and legal and constitutional protections for due process are widely observed. However, the criminal justice system suffers from a number of chronic weaknesses, many of which are tied to racial discrimination and contribute to disparities in outcomes that disadvantage people of color, particularly Black Americans. Beginning in 2017, however, the Trump administration presented a number of challenges to existing norms of government ethics and probity. Anticorruption watchdogs criticized President Trump for shifting management of his real-estate development empire to his children rather than divesting ownership or establishing a stronger structural barrier between himself and his businesses.

Also, a designation of Free does not mean that a country or territory enjoys perfect freedom or lacks serious problems, only that it enjoys comparatively more freedom than those rated Partly Free or Not Free (and some others rated Free). Freedom in the World is an annual global report on political rights and civil liberties, composed of numerical ratings and descriptive texts for each country and a select group of territories. The 2024 edition covers developments in 195 countries and 15 territories from January 1, 2023, through December 31, 2023. The Biden administration has pledged to make support for democracy a key part of US foreign policy, raising hopes for a more proactive American role in reversing the global democratic decline. To fulfill this promise, the president will need to provide clear leadership, articulating his goals to the American public and to allies overseas. He must also make the United States credible in its efforts by implementing the reforms necessary to address considerable democratic deficits at home.

A country or territory’s Freedom in the World status depends on its aggregate Political Rights score, on a scale of 0–40, and its aggregate Civil Liberties score, on a scale of 0–60. The total Political Rights and Civil Liberties scores are equally weighted in this calculation, leading to the following possible ranges. Also beginning with the 2018 edition, countries require an overall Civil Liberties score of 30 or better—in addition to a score of 7 or better in subcategory A (Electoral Process), and an overall Political Rights score of 20 or better—to qualify as an electoral democracy. Freedom House does not believe that legal guarantees of rights are sufficient for on-the-ground fulfillment of those rights. While both laws and actual practices are factored into scoring decisions, greater emphasis is placed on implementation. Safar had been advocating, without much luck, to provide medical training to ambulance workers when Hallen approached him with the idea of starting a private ambulance service in Pittsburgh’s Hill District — a predominantly African American area composed of various low-income, inner-city neighborhoods.

Raymond Gastil, a Harvard-trained specialist in regional studies from the University of Washington in Seattle, developed the methodology, which assigned political rights and civil liberties ratings to 151 countries and 45 territories and categorized them as Free, Partly Free, or Not Free. The findings appeared each year in Freedom House’s bimonthly journal Freedom at Issue (later titled Freedom Review). Freedom in the World first appeared in book form in 1978 and included short narratives for each country and territory rated in the study, as well as a series of essays by leading scholars on related issues. Freedom in the World continued to be produced by Gastil until 1989, when a larger team of in-house analysts was established. In the mid-1990s, the expansion of the country and territory narratives necessitated the hiring of outside analysts—a group of regional experts from the academic, media, and human rights communities—and the project has continued to grow in size and scope in the years since.

It has offices in a number of countries, where it promotes and assists local human rights workers and non-government organizations. The Freedom in the World report is composed of numerical ratings and supporting descriptive texts for 195 countries and 15 territories. External analysts assess 210 countries and territories, using a combination of on-the-ground research, consultations with local contacts, and information from news articles, nongovernmental organizations, governments, and a variety of other sources. Since 2007, we have assisted tens of thousands of activists, victims of human rights abuses, and their families across 150 countries by providing support for urgent needs like relocation, legal representation, trial monitoring, technical equipment, medical and living expenses, and other life-saving services.

100+ Stylish Living Room Ideas to Try in 2024

living room design inspiration

Inject energy into your scheme and get toasty with cosseting shades including sun-baked terracotta, on-trend orange, and toasted saffron. Multifunctional living rooms serve many purposes, but ultimately they should be escapist retreats in which to relax and spend quality time with loved ones. And your lighting design is paramount to creating the ideal atmosphere. Illuminate living room lighting ideas and combine task and ambient designs to affect the mood of your space as and when you need it, from dawn to dusk. Add texture underfoot, whilst zoning a seating area or relaxation corner with one of the best rug designs that unites your scheme with an accent color.

Let There Be Light

Here, designer Jessica Nelson leans toward warm and creamy tones for a more inviting space. This New York City apartment, crafted by Kati Curtis Design, features a tray ceiling that beautifully accentuates the Sputnik globe chandelier and adds depth to the layout. What's more, the mix of light and dark hues create a striking 3D effect. Maximizing every inch of a soaring ceiling, design-firm JAM builds a two-story bookshelf that doubles as an eclectic accent wall.

Add Pattern to Your Fireplace

Clean lines, trendy furniture, contemporary shapes, but then somewhere a nod to a more country, rustic style. The simplest way to get the look is to mix some natural textures with all those design-led pieces and to add plenty of throw pillows and blankets to your seating to soften up the space. Another simple lounge look, what could be more inviting than mid-century modern living room ideas?

Go graphic with black and white

Not all living room decor has to be visible to make an impact and turn the space into a cozy enclave. Just like an accent wall, an accent scent can completely transform a space. While candles are always a nice decor touch, a diffuser is the way to go for someone who doesn’t want to worry about blowing out the flame. Look for a cold-air diffusion, like AromaTech AroMini BT, which breaks down the fragrance mist into nanoparticles that linger. We love the Fig & Orange Blossom scent that evokes a luxurious resort setting right at home.

Scent the space

Today's living rooms include elements like ultra-comfortable seating, built-in TV walls, and a focus on natural light. Make a small living room feel like a jewel box by adding wallpaper. If you want to avoid anything too bold, choose a neutral color in a fun pattern. "I built the side shelves and made texture art above the fireplace mantel to bring warmth to what was bare," Amanda of design blog Dwellaware explains. Make waves in your living space with the seacore trend, to create a subtle, nautical feel. Coastal interiors are such a classic, and the beachy look works so well in living room decor because it's clean and bright, but really inviting and cozy, too.

Let your dream sofa decide the color scheme

Check out how to create an exposed brick wall if you want a step-by-step. Stylish and versatile, door curtains are ideal for zoning, creating privacy and keeping the warmth in, making it perfect for colder months. You can't go wrong with vertical stripes either, it'll create an illusion of height, making your living room appear bigger. Use the coffee table as an opportunity to fuse fashion with function, like this living room styled by Alyssa Rosenheck for Amanda Barnes Interiors. Black frames keep the gallery wall organized, as seen in this project designed by Nicole Hurd of Hurd Homes.

Play With Pattern and Color

Mixing old and new pieces in a range of styles can also give your living room a modern and eclectic feel. For more drama, use it on bookcases (think of it as an accent wall). Wegman recommends selecting a satin finish to keep the paint color from feeling too heavy and help distribute the natural light.

Pick versatile seating options

Dawson likes curtains and hardware to feel detailed but not fussy. She recommends hardware that is shaped like an elbow and mounts directly to the wall without a finial. She also likes solid linens from Holland & Sherry and a simple trim from Samuel & Sons for polish. Ponterio’s style includes a woven shade from Conrad for an additional layer, complemented by a flat tape finish.

Curate Coffee Table Books

In this loft apartment from Studio Yaqui in collaboration with JP Design Inc, the client was a young professional who wanted a fun living room update. "I wanted more than anything for this room to be comfortable and approachable,"Christina Kim of Christina Kim Interior Design explains. "We installed smooth beams on the ceilings and tied in the same wood tones on the frame of the chair, mantel top, even the frame of the art to carry the warmth through the room."

Nested furniture too, like these lovely coffee tables in this living room, are great for adding extra surface space when you need it but don't take up the entire room. And we get it, you want a TV to binge-watch Bridgerton (yes, again) but you don't like the fact there is this big black hole in the middle of your living room. There are plenty of living room TV ideas to disguise it, ranging from painting the wall behind in dark color to doing something like this where you hide the TV behind shutters. You might think lighting can come later with your living room decor, but in fact, you should be thinking about your lighting scheme early on. Good lighting can really make a living room so it's worth taking some time to plan what lighting you need in your space and where it's going to work in your layout.

A cozy sectional will keep the conversation going in this Ponterio-designed space. Create the illusion of a larger room by hanging sheer drapes at least six inches higher than the top of your window frames. We love that designer Kristin Harrison of Bungalow 10 Interiors chose a plum brown shade. Designer Tyler Karu blended an old-fashioned painting with more updated accessories like this peace sign gold sculpture for a one-of-a-kind living room.

Anyone can make a sleek living room appear warm and welcoming—all it takes are some thoughtful accessories. In this Brooklyn townhouse, Ishka Designs packed on the charm with intriguing ceramics and eye-catching artwork. A living room that hits that sweet spot between luxe and lived-in. In a sitting area of this California retreat, designed by Noz Nozawa, the asymmetry of the room is enhanced by a Casey McCafferty cocktail table that looks like it could come alive at any moment. The curvy rug underneath it by François Dumas further enlivens the room—both tonally and texturally—encouraging informal living that is as refined as it is comfortable. Mixing and matching is the style of this outré oasis in Yucca Valley, California.

In her current role, she explores everything from design trends and home tours to lifestyle product recommendations, including writing her monthly column, "What's in My Cart." This living room's walls are painted mustard yellow in a glossy finish for another level of charm. Ranging from small, minimalist setups to spacious and modern, these cozy living rooms are worth recreating. A large-scale tapestry is another great, budget-friendly alternative to a complicated gallery wall. You can usually find them for affordable prices, they add unique texture to your space, and they cover a large surface area. Mount a single shelf and lean your favorite prints against the wall.

Porterio also installs a lot of indoor-outdoor rugs from Perennials Fabrics for his clients who crave coziness. Monique Valeris is the home design director for Good Housekeeping, where she oversees the brand's home decorating coverage across print and digital. Prior to joining GH in 2020, she was the digital editor at Elle Decor.

Furniture that doubles up as something else like an ottoman or a stool is ideal as it will save you space. Shown here, combination dressers frame either side of the fireplace, making an undeniably impactful feature, showcasing styled shelfies and decorative logs. Open shelving gives smaller decorative objects a platform to dazzle, whilst adding mixed details, layered depth, and interest to the overall aesthetic. Modern living room ideas have become hives of activity for anything from relaxing, to socializing, Zoom workouts, mindful meditations, and home working. So that you can separate the ‘task at hand,’ try space zoning by creating dedicated areas for each activity. Dark walls, bold graphic prints and a pale mustard sofa creates a cosy snug-style seating area in this renovated home.

The Old State House in Boston

Army officers started producing plays in 1850, Swan added a stage and benches for the actors to perform. After Swan died in the late 1800s, the theater is where whalers sought shelter. During Monterey’s 167th anniversary in 1937, the Troupers of the Gold Coast revived old-time melodramas on the stage of California’s very first theater. Today, the structure is a California Historical Landmark and the pride of Monterey. Our history and heritage is woven throughout the state in the rich colors, patterns and textures found in our arts, our architecture, our museums and even our landscape.

Tips for an Eco-Friendly California Road Trip

Today the Old State House is a museum of Boston’s history managed by the Bostonian Society as well as being part of Boston National Historical Park. Guided tours of the Freedom Trail – of which the State House forms a part – are available, but you can also walk it independently. A visit to the Boston’s Old State House tends to take half an hour to an hour. Through Massacre, Revolution, and fire, the Old State House stands as the oldest surviving public building in Boston. Built in 1713, the building served as the center of civic, political, and business life. As important as what occurred inside the State House was what happened just outside its doors.

The captain never gave an order, but as the balls flew through the street, men fell dead and wounded. The first bloodshed of the Revolution fell on to the ice and snow in front of the Old State House. A cobblestone circle beneath the Old State House balcony marks the site of the 1770 Boston Massacre. The incident began with local boys taunting a British sentry on a cold March night.

This balcony was the scene of happier times on 18 July 1776, when Colonel Thomas Crafts read out the Declaration of Independence to the public for the first time. While the building was saved, the area around the State House was quickly built up. Today the Old State House, once the most prominent building in the area, is dwarfed by numerous skyscrapers and modern buildings and surrounded by busy streets. In 1904, a subway station was placed in the basement of the building, and it continues to be used by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (popularly known as “the T”) to this very day. Listing on CIRCA exposes your property to a large niche group of people who are specifically looking to purchase an old house.

The state government continued to use Old State House until 1798 when they moved to the New State House on Beacon Hill (where the Massachusetts government still meets to this day). After the government left, the building was used for offices and stores until 1881. In response, the Bostonian Society was formed to save the building and convert it to a museum. They restored the building to its pre-Revolutionary War appearance, including replicas of the lion and unicorn that were destroyed in 1776. From the adobes of the Southwest to the saltboxes of the Northeast, take a rollicking tour through America’s architectural history while perusing the most beautiful historical homes for sale in every state. In today’s world of having the internet in your pocket at all times, it’s easy to dismiss the old-fashioned visitor center as obsolete.

"Should there be an additional need ... then they'll submit another search warrant." Ball said the office had no reason to believe there were other victims at this time, but it continues to investigate. "It indicates that the preliminary DNA supports the conclusion that there is no support for inclusion of Robinson's DNA in the blood, or swabs that have been tested," Vance-Curzan said in court. Ball said the sheriff's office doesn't have information about who the blood belongs to. He told USA TODAY that police had no calls or reports of any domestic violence from the family.

The president made a sober speech about what he believes is at stake this election, saying that another Trump administration would be even more harmful to America than his first. Chants accused U.S. journalists of covering the war too little and misrepresenting it. “Western media, we see you, and all the horrors that you hide,” crowds chanted at one point.

Among them was Crispus Attucks, a black man recorded as the first casualty of the American Revolution. After Independence, the State House remained the seat of Massachusetts government until Bulfinch completed his imposing new legislative building on Beacon Hill. Today, it serves as the headquarters of the Bostonian Society, the historical society for the city, along with its library and museum. Built in 1713, this historic landmark served as the seat of colonial and state governments as well as a merchants’ exchange. After 1798 and the completion of the current Massachusetts State House, the Old State House housed commercial space and offices, at one point housed City Hall, and today a museum to Boston's history.

Operated by Revolutionary Spaces, Old State House served as the seat of colonial and state governments of Massachusetts. Visitors can learn more about early colonial and revolutionary history and enter rooms where history happened. The Bostonian Society was formed in 1881 to preserve and steward the Old State House, in response to plans for the possible demolition of the building due to real estate potential. It is one of the landmarks on Boston's Freedom Trail and is the oldest surviving public building in Boston. It now serves as a history museum that was operated by the Bostonian Society through 2019. The Old State House was also part of the Boston Massacre of 1770, as attested to by a plaque beneath its balcony which indicates that this was the location where British soldiers fired into a group of Bostonians.

Kent Lovern, the chief deputy to District Attorney John Chisholm, also said he doesn't have information on whose blood was found. He largely deferred to comments made in court Monday by Assistant District Attorney Ian Vance-Curzan, or declined to comment due to it being a pending court case. “I know that we’re not letting any particular evidence not be searched for, so we have an ongoing, looking at not only searching for other witnesses, anything that will help us further the investigation along," he said. Steven Anderson ended the statement by asking the media to respect his family's privacy. Asked if the home was considered a crime scene, Burnett said, "That's an interesting question. On a cold March night in 1770, a beleaguered squadron of British soldiers opened fire in the square in front of this royal building, killing five individuals and wounding many others. By the next morning, leaders called the event a "bloody massacre." Six years later, shots were heard again in the square. On July 18, 1776, Bostonians gathered under the balcony of Old State to hear for the first time the Declaration of Independence. After the American army gained control of Boston from the British in March of 1776, the Old State House became the seat of government for the new state of Massachusetts. In July of 1776, the Declaration of Independence was reading to the city from the second story balcony.

Incongruously but elegantly set in the midst of modern skyscrapers and congested traffic, this former legislative house is the oldest surviving public building in Boston. It was built in 1713 for the British governor (notice the lion and unicorn still standing regally atop the building's façade) and the colonial legislature. Proclamations, including the 1776 Declaration of Independence, were read in this building, often from the balcony on the east side. The area below the balcony was the scene of the Boston Massacre in 1770 (commemorated by a ring of cobblestones), when British soldiers fired on an unruly crowd, killing five men.

Mobs of laborers, sailors, and others of "the lower sort" joined into the confrontation. A detachment of seven soldiers under command of a Captain eventually emerged on the scene to rescue the beleaguered sentry. When they crossed the square to reach him, the crowd formed around them and the captain had the men draw into a small perimeter, muskets loaded. The next stop on Freedom Trail is the site of the Boston Massacre, located on a busy street in front of the museum and commemorated by a cobblestone ring on the plaza in front of the Old State House. The museum offers an array of programming and exhibitions, some tied to the Boston Massacre.

From this balcony, Bostonians listened to royal proclamations, but here they also heard for the first time the Declaration of Independence, which announced the birth of a new nation. The Old State House Museum is the original state capitol building of Arkansas. Since 1833, when construction began, the building and its grounds have witnessed many of the most important events in Arkansas history. Today, the museum’s exhibits and events are open to the public. In 1836, Arkansas became a state. Constructed in 1713, the Old State House (known as the “Town House” until the Revolution) was the center of royal government in Massachusetts Bay Colony and the focal point for many of the Revolution’s most dramatic events. The Boston Massacre unfolded in its shadow on March 5, 1770, and eyewitness accounts were collected inside in the subsequent days.

Constructed in 1818 by Francisco Ávila, the house is now a treasured California Historic Landmark and an iconic architectural site in the City of Angels. Ávila and his family lived in the house until 1868 before being overtaken by a U.S. Over the following years, the mansion was used as a hotel, lodging, and a temporary home to the U.S. troops. During the late 1920s, the now-abandoned house was on the brink of demolition when preservationist  Christine Sterling turned it into a museum, where visitors get to witness how life was back in the 1800s. Downtown Los Angeles is as unique as can be with its mind-blowing skyscrapers and striking architecture.

The origin of the  Gothic Revival house has two contradicting but equally interesting stories. It’s said that the house was constructed in 1850, but how and where it was originally built is not clear. The official story says that real estate company John Middleton and Sons built the house for Abner Phelps and his wife Augusta Russell in S.F. The unofficial one told by Phelps' great-granddaughter in 1960 says that the house was built in New Orleans and then shipped in pieces to California, because Augustina was homesick. The Old Chronicle Building is a Romanesque Revival-style structure that has adorned the San Francisco skyline since 1889—it was the headquarters of the San Francisco Chronicle until 1924.

California’s unparalleled art scene owes so much to Edwin B. Crocker, the founder of the first art museum. Located in Sacramento, the Crocker Art Museum opened in 1890 and has since served as the primary regional resource for the study of fine arts— it’s also home to the famous Gerald Hansen Library. If you’re interested in European, Asian, African, and Oceanic art, ceramics, and photography, this is your go-to destination. The cedar cabin in the Wrightwood Mountains is one of the oldest houses in California. Built in 1801, the home sits on an elevation of 5,900 feet above the Mojave Desert. The original log cabin was California’s first ranger station—throughout the years, it served as a home to forest rangers, cattle ranchers, and philosophers.

Knight told USA TODAY that police believe the suspected shooter began his rampage downstairs, then went upstairs before returning to the first floor and killing himself. According to Knight, investigators determined that the suspected shooter got into an altercation with his wife. However, police say that the father left his youngest son, the 10-year-old who later called the police, unharmed. Information about attending all of the 2024 LA Pride events is available here.
